The USMP and its success in Peruvian sport

San Martín de Porres University, as a strategic partner of CIES, has for many years contributed to the development of sport in Peru, in particular thanks to the creation of its professional football and volleyball teams which have given great satisfaction.

FOOTBALL

The Club Deportivo Universidad de San Martín de Porres (www.clubdeportivousmp.edu.pe) was created on 21 January 2004 and won the Peruvian professional football championship three times in 2007, 2008 and 2010. It has also taken part in the Copa Libertadores de América three times and in the Copa Sudamericana three times. San Martin de Porres is the only Peruvian university with a professional football team.

The mission of the club is to encourage professional football practice based on sound foundations and ethical values, with the objective of developing Peruvian football. It is administered by the University, which makes it a model institution at national and international level.

It has modern facilities on a par with those of major foreign teams, which are located on the university campus in Santa Anita. The club also has various football schools located in several neighbourhoods in Lima where many young people learn the fundamentals of the sport. The best players then join youth sections with the objective of being part of the professional team one day.

The 1998 category of the club made up the backbone of the national team which won the under 15 South American Cup last year in Bolivia. The club includes the professional team, the reserve side and the various youth sections.

Today, almost the entire professional team comes from the club training centre and many players play or have played in foreign teams. Emphasis is placed on the training centre, with the objective of being the Peruvian team that exports the most players abroad.

VOLLEYBALL

The University’s professional volleyball team won its first national volleyball league title during the 2013-2014 season, after being runner-up two years in a row. The team was created in 2011 and its current coach is Spaniard Juan Diego García.

To win the title, the team wanted to recruit European players, but it was not easy to convince them to come and play in our country given that the Peruvian championship was not appealing enough to recruit the players the club had in mind. However, Serbian player Jadranka and Brazilian player Milca came to join the team.

The University has a training Academy located on the Santa Anita campus and its volleyball teams play in the following categories: children, youth and professional. The facilities are located in the Engineering and Architecture Faculty at La Molina FIA. The volleyball team is also administered by the University, which makes it a model institution at national and international level.
