Darryl Newton, who is head of the law module for the FIFA/CIES Executive Programme organised with Nelson Mandela University (NMU), as well as Yoliswa Lumka, Wergelé McKenzie and Wafeekah Begg, who are all alumni of the Executive Programme, have been appointed to important positions by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS). SAIDS is an organisation recognised by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Darryl, Yoliswa and Wergelé’s duties will include hearing cases involving athletes who have tested positive for prohibited substances intended to improve their performance.
In South Africa, juries responsible for overseeing doping cases consist of three members, made up of a legal expert who chairs the hearing, a person tasked with expert medical evaluations and a sports manager who defends the interests of the athletes. Consequently, Darryl will chair the jury sessions to which he is appointed. Yoliswa and Wergelé, for their part, will represent athletes.
In addition, Wafeekah will prosecute most of the doping cases.
It is also noteworthy that Denver Hendricks, CIES coordinator in South Africa, has served as the President of the SAIDS Appeal Commission for several years, following his appointment to the position by the Minister for Sport.
