About BZU

The history of the University dates back to 1924, when Nabiha Nasir, an educational visionary, started a school in Birzeit at a time when schools hardly existed in the area. His main objective was to provide elementary schooling for the girls of the town and neighbouring villages. After having developed into a secondary school for both boys and girls, Birzeit embarked on further and continuous developments: it became a highly-reputed college and then a fully recognised university, graduating its first bachelor degree batch in 1976.

Today, Birzeit University comprises 8 faculties (arts, science, engineering, information technology, commerce and economics, law and public administration, nursing, and graduate studies), as well as 11 institutes and centres (women’s studies, environmental and water studies, international studies, community & public health, etc.). The Centre for Continuing Education is the CIES’ direct partner in the International University Network.

Birzeit University, that comprises 300 teaching staff members and more than 8,700 students, is committed to excellence and encourages creativity, experimentation, innovation, perfection as well as team work and democratic practices anchored in pluralism, freedom of expression and respect for others. Additionally, the University endeavours to excel in higher education, scientific research, and service to the community. Since its establishment, Birzeit University has remained committed to providing equal learning opportunities to qualified individuals and to prepare students to become good citizens active in their society and to fork for its well-being, advancement, and welfare.

Birzeit University provides the appropriate environment for students to develop their characters and realize their potentials in an atmosphere that stresses the Arab-Islamic heritage and is open to the world.
