Joel Calliste | graduate 2023

What is your current professional activity? And your involvement in sport? 
. Accounts Manager at a local company.
. Involved in sports at the grassroot coaching level and currently the Team Manager for the National Senior Men's Football Team.
 
Why did you choose to study the FIFA/CIES Programme in Sport Management at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus? 
To gain additional knowledge on how to effectively manage my local football club and find ways to aid the country as a whole.
 
What were your expectations before the start of the course? And… were they met? 
My expectations were to assess my current approach to execution of management and to gain knowledge from those who are qualified and experienced in the field. I must say they were met and, in some cases, exceeded.
 
What would you say are the key strengths of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management? 
Fosters an environment of comfort to learn. The site visit component allowed for a visual facility which can be used as a template for other countries.
 
What benefits (on a personal and/or professional level) did you gain from attending the course? 
Gain friends, colleagues, facilitated avenues where i can work on my communication /public speaking weakness.
 
How have the courses offered by the programme aided in developing your knowledge, competencies, and skills? 
Provided a knowledge base, allowed me to explore possibilities through assignments and project. Allowed for group work, debates, etc.
 
How has the programme contributed to your professional growth and employability? 
In my current role as team manager, it allowed me to showcase some of those key nuggets of knowledge gained.
 
What is your best memory/highlight of the course? 
Eating Seafood Roti with Knife and Fork.
 
Would you recommend the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management? Why? 
Yes, most definitely. It's a good programme to learn how to effectively manage clubs and events. Once an individual is actively involved in sports and aspires to success, it is critical that they can manage the resources, venues, events and individuals properly. This course gives a great insight into how to cater for them.
