POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT
Interview with

Devin Elcock | graduate 2021

What is your current professional activity? And your involvement in sport?
I am the Assistant coach and Administrator of the Defence Force Professional Football Team. I also held the position of assistant coach of Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) Elite under 13 program and head coach of their under 11 program.

Why did you choose to study the FIFA/CIES Programme in Sport Management at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus?
I choose the program because most of the people that taught me about sports management did so on their belief. I wanted the opportunity to gain more knowledge where I can help develop sports in my establishment and by extension the younger generation.

What were your expectations before the start of the course? And… were they met?
I expected to complete the course with greater knowledge that I came with. The participants along with the course material came across as perfect chemistry. All expectations were met.

What would you say are the key strengths of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management?
I would say, having lecturers that actually know about sports. Most of our classes were so interactive, the real life experiences from participants also help a lot throughout the course. Major strength, Ms. Calisia Gregoire. She always kept it professional and was always there to assist whenever we needed assistance.

What benefits (on a personal and/or professional level) did you gain from attending the course?
There are so many, I feel much more comfortable within myself after presenting so many times. The way I speak, my writing style and also my colleagues who I developed a networking relationship with.

How have the courses offered by the programme aided in developing your knowledge, competencies, and skills?
Every module that was taught has a significant role in sports. Interestingly, I had no knowledge on facility management and after my facility presentation. Considerations are being made for me to present to my working establishment.

How has the programme contributed to your professional growth and employability?
I am now given the opportunity to assist in decision making as a subject matter expert. My confidence is on a higher level and I am much more marketable now.

What is your best memory/highlight of the course?
Our group debates in law, was very intense but we had a lot of fun. Also meeting with colleagues to work on group assignments or whatsapp call with some of our foreign participants.

Would you recommend the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management? Why?
I already did. Reason, it was recommended to me by Sharon O’brien and it helped develop me not only as a sporting administrator, but as a person. The UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Dip in sports is like the bible for sporting administrators.
