POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT
Interview with

Garvin Warwick | graduate 2022

What is your current professional activity?
Founder and Athletic Director of Spartans TT Sports Club.

Why did you choose to study the FIFA/CIES Programme in Sport Management at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus?
My general attraction to athletes’ behaviour through sport drives my passion for finding innovative techniques to enhance existing training programs and create unforgettable experiences and lifelong messages that captivate the following and buy in from the athletes and sports administrators I interact with. Therefore, ensuring that I stay abreast of global best practices continues to be key to my personal development to create these unforgettable experiences.

What were your expectations before the start of the course?
Understanding the global sports industry and its management.

What would you say are the key strengths of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management?
The key strengths for me would be that the program gave practical global standard examples and how the sports industry operates for us as aspiring sport management leaders to build a solid foundation in our own space. Using these global standards along with our own management style, we can impact on.

What benefits (on a personal and/or professional level) did you gain from attending the course?
I gained an in-depth understanding of the management of sports. Even with my MBA in Strategic Marketing, the program helped me think outside the box and more importantly apply more critical thinking to sports management and its needs.

How have the courses offered by the programme aided in developing your knowledge, competencies, and skills?
The most impactful course for me personally was the Finance as well as the Human Resource courses as these courses brought key insight into the management in a sport that many overlook during the planning and preparation phase of most projects.

How has the programme contributed to your professional growth and employability?
This program has opened my appetite to learn more and have a greater understanding of sport in general with the overall aim of impacting sport not only locally but regionally and internationally. Knowledge is power and with power, we can have an impact.

What is your best memory/highlight of the course?
Our law debates. Made me feel I was part of those cases based on the depth of research that we had to do. Well of course as well as the actual graduation.

Would you recommend the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management? Why?
I will certainly recommend the course to anyone who is seriously interested in having an impact on the sporting landscape in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean as the program provides a wealth of knowledge and experienced lectures.
