POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT
Interview with

Marissa Sanderson | graduate 2018

What is your current professional activity? And your involvement in sport?
Currently I am not involved in any sport. I am focusing on completing my Masters Degree

Why did you choose to study the FIFA/CIES Programme in Sport Management at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus?
I chose this course at UWI because I wanted to gain more knowledge about the different areas in the sports industry. The curriculum in the UWI/FIFA/CIES program provides all the necessary resources for me to achieve my goal. Also, Trinidad and Tobago has a rich culture and its sporting industry is on a rise.

What were your expectations before the start of the course? And… were they met?
My expectations before I started the course were to have the opportunity to meet new people and become more familiar with international issues related to sports. Yes my expectations were met and then some.

What would you say are the key strengths of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management?
Time Management / convenient (the classes were held online and at a time that was manageable for everyone.) The program offers many courses that are necessary for those who would like to have a long lasting career in sports. The lectures, program and faculty members are highly knowledgeable and willing to assists persons at any given time.

What benefits (on a personal and/or professional level) did you gain from attending the course?
I have a more open-mind/ better perspective on the sporting industry and how much work it takes to become successful and to sustain it. I also gain a bigger network including all the new colleagues I’ve had the privilege to meet.

How has the programme contributed to your professional growth and employability?
As of right now, the program has opened doors for me as different companies and programs here in Trinidad and Tobago and in the United States have showed interest in my qualifications and certifications. Once I complete my Masters degree, I believe there will be more opportunities.

What is your best memory/highlight of the course?
My best memory of this course was the facility outing my class and I went on. During our last semester, our program director/professor and our program coordinator took the class out to visit some of the sporting facilities we have here in Trinidad. It was an amazing experience to see the potential this country has in training athletes and how much the local sporting industry  has grown and where it can go once the nation puts its fourth maximum effort into promoting sports. The outing also gave the class a chance to have some fun and bond with each other. It was no more professor to student or student to student communication. Everyone was able to get personal and learn more about each other. The other great memory was our graduation ceremony.

Would you recommend the UWI/FIFA/CIES Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management? Why?
Yes I would recommend this program because it gives you the best of both worlds. Individuals in this program will be able to continue in their professions while bettering themselves by being a student of an amazing program. It is also a great life experience and it will open doors for those who want to make a new step in life towards the sporting industry.
