INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME IN SPORT MANAGEMENT
Interview with

Meli Mafu | graduate 2015

What is your current professional activity? and your involvement in sport?
Pharmaceutical sales, I am a technical director at an amateur football club in the village of Peddie, Eastern Cape.

Why did you choose to attend the FIFA/CIES Programme in Sport Management at NMMU?
I honestly wanted to expand my business acumen in the sporting fraternity especially football. I have been denied an opportunity to participate fully in sport by my upbringing. This course gave me a glimmer of hope that I can be fully involved in what I love which is sport and I am truly hoping that my dream will come true in the end.

What were your expectations before the start of the course? and… were they met?
I expected it to be vigorous, informative, unique and superb. It has exceeded my expectations as it gave me an opportunity to interact and liaise with locally renowned and international guest speakers whom I never dreamt of being in the same room with them.

What would you say are the key strengths of the NMMU/FIFA/CIES Certificate in Sport Management?
The modules and the way it has been structured, also the lectures and guest speakers were phenomenal.

What benefits (on a personal and/or professional level) did you gain from attending the course?
Holistically the whole course but sport communications, marketing and management were my highlight. The art of communication was superb. I am in the business of talking and listening. This has tremendously improved my dexterity when it comes to communication.

What is your best memory/highlight of the course?
The whole course and, especially, meeting Mr Phil Chippa Masinga.

Would you recommend the NMMU/FIFA/CIES Certificate in Sport Management? Why?
Definitely, because of the knowledge and opportunity that has been bestowed upon me as an alumni of an international accredited course. I hope this will one day take me to Zurich, Switzerland and other parts of the world via sport.
